To get you hyped for the TWML Street Party next week at Boxpark Shoreditch, we caught up with veteran host and party starter Monikah Lee to find out what you can expect from the main event.
Tell us who you are and what you do.
I go by the name Monikah Lee and I’ve built a career as a radio personality, television and event host by working with the likes of Link Up TV, BkChatldn, iluvlive, Orshaircare, Crazy Colors, Westside, Go Think Big O2, Wireless and Waitrose to name a few.
As a seasoned host, I’ve been very fortunate to have my visuals broadcasted to over 660,000 subscribers with views ranging from 50,000-400,000 plus, organically. I’ve always wanted to work the stage somehow but I wasn’t sure how as I am not a singer, dancer or a trained actor, but I took a leap of faith by believing in myself and I’ve had the opportunity to host to massive crowds.
How did the idea for TWML come about?
The TWML acronym stands for Talks With Monikah Lee.
After becoming homeless at the age of 16, I lost everything and had to start rebuilding at a vulnerable stage in my life, a time which led to me believing I had no opportunities and living in a hostel further reinforced that. I began to lose my confidence and was far from reaching my full potential. I curated #TWML to give young adults in London a comfortable and safe space to discuss social, political, cultural and engaging topics that affect our society in what attendees have described as ‘Question Time for a younger generation’.
The no holds barred discussion with my raw personality definitely makes the shows much anticipated for my audience as I continuously bring a new dynamic of entertainment, culture and heated conversations.
Now in its third successful year, #TWML has grown from a small group of 15 in a small shisha lounge in Croydon with the last exceeding 280 guests at Proud City. Some of the past panellists have included, rappers like Ms Banks and Cbiz; social activist, Harnaam Kaur, Nissy Tee, and political activist - Adnam Chowdhury; blogger; Desthy, and controversial speaker, Jamz.
I am now ready to expand the #TWML brand by creating events that resonate with young people from different walks of life, knowing that they’re guaranteed a good night when the name #TWML is involved.
What can visitors expect from your event in Shoreditch on 21 June?
A fun-packed night, street party style!
I have the best of the best #TWML resident DJs; SirDJCorey and DJ MT will be playing the best in bashment, hip hop, RnB, afrobeats, grime, UK rap, pop - it's an evening not to be missed and we're here to provide an unforgettable event. Be sure to come down and dance until your feet hurt!
Who do you think everyone should be listening to right now?
My list can go on for days! First of all I am a bashment lover so Dexta Daps, Popcaan, Masicka, Stylo G, Lisa Mercedes and Jodian Natty are top of the list; but then I also love my UK artists and the talent that is surfacing right now; Ms Banks, SNE, Shauna Shadae, Frisco, Che Lingo, Nathaniel Shalom, Lights, Sneakbo, Rebeca Garton, Sharlene Klarice and Duchess. The list goes on and it’s in no particular order but I admire all their talent.
What does the rest of 2018 have in store for you?
I have my 7th live Talks With Monikah Lee Show – details will be announced soon. So definitely keep an eye out!
More branded #TWML feel good events which will include brunches, workshops and so much more, and you’ll be seeing my face on the screens a lot more in 2018.
I’m also going to be doing a lot more public speaking and continue to be part of events that uplift young people.
Are there any artists you're keen to work with in the future?
I would love to work with Adwoah Aboah. I am inspired by her platform ‘Gurls Talk’ and how she’s created a safe space for women to talk about their problems, sexism, depression just anything and everything that affects women in society. I think we both can create something awesome working together.
Finally, what was the last song you listened to?
Soco by Starboy ft. Terri x Spotless x Ceeza Milli x Wizkid
