Spotlight: Rudie's

The new year brings a new menu to Boxpark Shoreditch. This weekend, we’re proud to welcome the popular Jamaican eatery, Rudie’s, to the Boxpark family; diners will be treated to a tapas-style selection of signature Caribbean flavours, perfect for these long winter nights. We caught up with head honcho Matin Miah to find out more...

Tell us who you are and what you do.

I’m Matin Miah, co-founder and Chief Rudebwoy at Rudie’s. We’re a Jamaican restaurant that has brought Real Jerk, Jamaica Bites (tapas) and creative rum cocktails, like Dancehall Queen and Katch A Fire, to spice up the London food and drinks scene, since September 2015. Our first restaurant is based in the hip Dalston / Stokey neighbourhood in Hackney, and in the past two years we’ve become known for our contemporary Jamaican cuisine rooted in authentic Island flavours and ingredients. 

Which song best sums up your brand?

Probably Bob Marley’s, One Love! This song captures the spirit of the Jamaican motto, “Out of Many One People” and Rudie’s is all about blending the best of all to create a rich and vibrant experience.

What can customers expect from you at Boxpark Shoreditch?

In our new home at Boxpark Shoreditch, we’ll be serving up the signature dishes like our famous Jerk Chicken, Curry Goat, Boss Burger, Peppered Shrimps, Jerk Calamari, as well as BoxFood of amazing island combos for those on the go. So come and grab a Jerk It Up or Ital Vital or Jah Love box to spice up your lunch! No Jamaican meal is complete without the likes of a thirst quenching Rum Punch, Guinness Punch or perhaps a Ting, so these will be flowing all day long. If you’ve already been to our Dalston restaurant then you know the vibe is going to be banging!

What is your favourite item from your menu?

It’s got to be curry goat. I just can’t tire of this dish. A classic Jamaican dish that’s comforting and satisfying, especially with a portion of Rice and Peas and a little squeeze of our homemade Papaya Scotch Bonnet hot sauce - simply mouthwatering, right? We also serve it as roti wrap which is a lunch time biggie!

Which other Boxpark Shoreditch trader would you recommend to customers?

We love Voodoo Rays as they are neighbours in Dalton, too, and of course, Dum Dums Donutterie; who doesn’t love a doughnut?!

What is your favourite thing about Shoreditch?

I love the vibrancy, diversity and youthfulness of this part of London, that still manages to fuse the old and the new; it has become a major London destination for all these reasons and I believe it’s a natural home for Rudie’s. We intend to enrich the diversity of this area even more with our unique Jamaican offering that’s very much needed from what I can see.

Finally, what would your last meal on Earth be and why?

Oh wow, a big question! It will have to be either Jerk Pork from Scotchie’s in Jamaica, Karahi Ghost from Tayyabs in Whitechapel or my sisters cooking - I’d ask for them all because they all make me happy!
