Securing a loyal fan base rarely ever boils down to just one thing. Some crave bold flavours while others want their meal as Instagrammable as possible; value for money is king at a time when people don’t really have very much of it.
So, what if we told you there’s a restaurant at Boxpark Croydon that ticks all these boxes?
Enter - Nanny Outars.
The brainchild of Sam and Chris, Nanny Outars serves up authentic Guyanese dishes inspired by their very own grandmother, Nanny Outar, who taught them all she knew about making traditional Guyanese food from scratch. Yes. Everything is made fresh, right down to their famous chilli sauce. The ingredients are ethically sourced, too, with the meat produce coming from free range British farms.
So, what’s on the menu?
Personally, I’m of the opinion that a great menu doesn’t need to be complicated; you just have to be able do a handful of things really, really well. And that’s exactly what these fellas do.
Whether you’re opting for a hearty roti wrap or a stacked lunch box, there’s plenty of choice when it comes to fillings and flavours. The succulent lamb is out of this world but, for me, it’s about the BBQ chicken. Plain poultry this ain’t; seasoned to perfection and with the perfect amount of kick, the BBQ chicken is the business and the perfect mains for your lunch box, or filler in your wrap. If you walk on the vegan side of life then you can also tuck into the banging split-pea and okra dahl.
The lunchbox is a real treat because it’s not just a mouth-watering selection of fresh cooked Guyanese flavours, but it’s also unbeatable value, too, at just £5 every weekday, 12-3pm.
Top tip: get the BBQ chicken lunchbox with either roti or rice and then top it off with the fresh slaw and some green beans or fries; the BBQ sauce will keep everything coated in flavour and the combination of the cool and the spice is out of this world. Don’t forget the chilli sauce either, seriously.
If the roti wraps and lunchboxes don’t float your boat then perhaps a Nanny Outars rice box will whet your appetite. Made with basmati rice and seasoned with thyme, all spice, garlic and lemon juice, when this fragrant dish is paired with any of the main meat of veggie dishes, magic happens; the combination heightens the flavours and delivers a taste explosion.
Looking for a little tipple to go with your meal? Nanny Outars also happens to stock a generous helping of quality rum, including El Dorado, the premium rum of Guyana.
From the colourful and inviting atmosphere of their restaurant, to the friendly service, delicious food and value for money, Nanny Outars really does have it all. It’s one of the original dons at Boxpark Croydon and for good reason, too. If you know then you know, and if you don’t, well then, you’d better come in and find out.
