We bought a beautiful Christmas tree from Norway and decked the halls with fairy lights. The only question was, who would turn them on? The musical influence of Garage in South London had long been celebrated and so, it seemed a perfect fit to bring in the legendary So Solid Crew to help us switch on the lights and give us a weighty dose of club night nostalgia. The Crew performed a compilation of classic tunes and unexpected remixes and worked the crowd into a festive frenzy and, naturally, the countdown to switch-on was '21 Seconds'. They even got Croydon Labour council leader Tony Newman up on stage as the 47th member!
10 years of BOXPARK – 10 most magical moments
— 6 Dec 2021, 12:00 by Barney Dufton
Over the last 10 years we have become renowned for our diverse, ever-evolving, and culturally-relevant events whilst building a reputation as a venue that's more than just a place to eat and drink.
The vast array of events we have hosted from football screenings to music concerts, drag brunches to Oktoberfest, has meant there really is something for everyone. We have thrown over 8,000 events over the last decade and have experienced many magical moments across our three venues, so we thought we would take a look back at the top 10 to celebrate 10 Years of BOXPARK.
1. So Solid Crew performing at the Christmas light switch on with 21 second countdown - December 2016
2. Shift K3y with a live orchestra at BOXPARK Wembley- July 2017
Electronic artist Shift K3y teamed with Croydon's very own London Mozart Players to deliver a special show with the orchestra accompanying his live DJ set after hours of rehearsals teaching them his tracks. Shift K3Y dropped tune after tune all to the full backing of the London Mozart Players who really came into their own for the grand finale of MJ Cole's 'Crazy Love'.
3. Back to back End of Season Crystal Palace Awards - April 2018 & 2019
We hosted the End of Season Crystal Palace Awards twice at BOXPARK Croydon and full house attendance for both of them. All of the players and management staff were in attendance as well as sports journalists, fans and even the team mascots made an appearance! Awards included Aaron Wan Bissaka winning young player and players player in the same season, Townsend's rocket volley against Man City winning goal of the season and signing session for all the fans.
4. Spice Girls Fanpark @ BOXPARK Wembley - June 2019
In June 2019, BOXPARK Wembley celebrated the Spice Girls reunion at Wembley Stadium by creating a dedicated Spice Girls fanpark. For three days in a row, BOXPARK Wembley was home to fans of the iconic British girl group and it was utter chaos (in a good way)! The fanpark had Spice Girl-themed cocktails, dance workshops to learn moves from their music video, glitter art/face painting, and the best 90s pop playlist to keep fans dancing all day and night.
5. Capital XTRA Homegrown - July 2019
In July 2019, Capital XTRA's Homegrown Live returned for another huge night of UK music last night at BOXPARK Croydon. Artists including Not3s, MoStack, Tion Wayne, Steel Banglez, MIST, JAY1 and Ms Banks, as well as the night's resident DJ Ras Kwame, took over the venue to deliver the ultimate night of summer vibes. Special guest appearances from the likes of Aitch, Fredo and more brought some major energy to the stage and the crowd was one of the littest yet.
6. Rebecca Ferguson performance Just Eat X Factor Final Screening - December 2019
Fans of the show joined Just Eat for a spectacular screening of The X Factor: Celebrity Final at BOXPARK Wembley. They watched every nail-biting moment on a 16ft screen whilst tucking in to tasty street food from over 20 restaurants. Plus, there was also a very special LIVE AT BOXPARK performance from X Factor royalty Rebecca Ferguson hosted by Becca Dudley and if that wasn't enough, attendees also could also slide into the BeatBox to discover their inner superstar with Hip Hop Karaoke, followed by DJ Olos providing the tunes until midnight.
7. Barry from EastEnders’ Opening Ceremony at Euro 2020 - June 2021
Almost as if by accident, as the big screen beamed live coverage of legendary singer Andrea Bocelli performing during the official opening ceremony, gracing our stage was Shaun Williamson (AKA Barry from Eastenders), who performed a selection of his favourite covers, including "Sweet Caroline" to adoring fans! He became a regular at our Euros screenings going viral on social media each time.
8. Rio Ferdinand appearance at BOXPARK Wembley Euro 2020 - June / July 2021
Rio Ferdinand surprised the crowds by turning up to some of our England fanparks on the way to his pundit job for the England game at Wembley Stadium. Because they won, he said it was a superstition that he had to come every game for good luck so made an appearance on his way to the stadium for every England game!
9. Atomic Kitten at BOXPARK Croydon singing Southgate You’re the One - July 2021
During the Euros and the hype of the Southgate You’re The One song gaining traction, the team decided to invite iconic pop girl group Atomic Kitten to perform the song for the first time. The reaction was crazy with the moment being picked up nationally across the media, and even led to a group reunion with their new remix hitting the top charts.
10. Francis Bourgeois turning on the Shoreditch Christmas Lights - November 2021
Social media sensation Francis Bourgeois, who has been taking the UK by storm with his wholesome trainspotting videos, walked out to Slippy by Underworld in front of a screaming crowd. We announced his appearance on the Wednesday evening and by Thursday morning the event sold out with the post announcing his appearance gaining over 1,000 likes on Instagram. As soon as he walked out he did a wholesome Christmas speech about following his passions and how he quit his part time job to become a full time trainspotter which the crowds went wild for! He then counted down from 10 and switched on the Christmas lights to Mariah Carey All I Want For Christmas before grabbing a microphone and singing along.
