Online Croydon Social Panels 18 08 28 Pit LDN Genre Clash Carnival Special5

The Pit London returns for a Carnival spectacular this August Bank Holiday weekend. We caught up with founders, Alfred and Tramell, to get a look behind the scenes and find out what you have to look forward to at Boxpark Croydon.

Tell us who you are and what you do.

The Pit London is an urban lifestyle brand that specialises in events and radio. We hold numerous events throughout London and have a monthly show on Reprezent Radio, every third Wednesday11pm-1am, where we highlight amazing artists within the alternative Hip Hop scene.

How did The Pit London come about?

The Pit London came about through frustration of a lack of good urban nights going on at the time. We felt that no events really spoke to us, they lacked that spice and variation we were looking for. We wanted to provide an alternative for people like us who wanted to hear more underground UK Hip Hop. After doing a few events, we knew that this was what we wanted to do. In that time we developed more brands that fit our different personalities and help drive UK Hip-Hop, as at the time there were not many brands doing so.

Your bank holiday event is bringing something special to Boxpark Croydon. Can you tell us what people can expect from your Carnival Genre Clash?

Anyone who has been to a Genre Clash knows that it is a serious roadblock event. Many of our friends can not get in if they come after a certain time, cit really is an event you need to come early to. As it's a carnival event expect a lot of Caribbean inspired sets, high energy and sweat. We would advise you not to bring your best shoes!

This is set to be the biggest Genre Clash yet, can you drop some hints at who'll be stepping up to the decks?

We are really excited by this line up as we know everyone goes in and is ready to give 100%. The sets at Genre Clash get very competitive and we have selected an amazing line up of people that take the craft seriously. Clash culture is a huge part of being a DJ so this is like the championship of DJing. It's all in good fun though!

Fresh from her Boiler Room debut, Darkstepper takes it back to her roots with a UK Funky House. She'll be up against Sanctuary LDN founder, Esi, who will be stepping up to educate us on the original UK Urban sound that is UKG. Boxpark Croydon resident Donch is giving us a taste of what R&B at carnival sounds like. His rival for the night is DJ Klipa, fresh from touring the world with Big Shaq; he'll be representing UK Hip Hop.

A new face to the Genre Clash is DJ JDen and he's playing Bashment, enlisting the help of Double Cup Kase as his personal host. Stepping up to represent Afrobeats we have Sandra Omari of the 211 Girls. We have a special guest DJ rounding off the night for a special one hour carnival set. To top things off the night will be hosted by the greatest of them all, Fatz, to keep the energy bubbling.

What does the rest of 2018 have in store for you?

We have an industry event called Playlist Party UK where artists can play their songs to a crowd of music professionals to gain instant feedback. We also have our popular open mic cypher coming up as well as a few showcases, which will shine a light on a few select artists we've been into this year. Also during this time, we want to take our Reprezent Radio show and blog to the next level. Lastly, we aim to do another Genre Clash before the year is out, maybe even at the new Boxpark in Wembley!

Who should everyone be listening to right now?

Alfred: An artist called Rimon from Amsterdam, her song Realize is amazing! I know its cliche but she is definitely next up; also Octavian, who doesn't love that song 'Move Me' with him and Mura Masa?! It's such a tune!

Tramell/Darkstepper: So many people! Tedy Andreas, Calioto, Rootsz, Artz, Fresco, VXMOB, Joey Purp - I could go on...
