Spotlight: The SheJay
— 9 Aug 2018 by Lauren Furey
Boxpark's resident DJs are guaranteed floor-fillers, setting the vibe for the night and kick-starting your weekend in style. None more so than The SheJay herself. We caught up with her to find out about her journey to the decks and who you should be listening to right now!
Tell us who you are and what you do.
I'm The SheJay and I'm a multi genre DJ!
When did you first realise you wanted to be a DJ?
I started out MCing in the garage scene in my teens, and just tried to mix two tracks together one day and it sounded dope! 19 years later, it's still my favourite thing to do! I'm the most 'me' behind the decks.
Who are some of your biggest influences in music?
DJ EZ without a doubt! I followed him around the UK, and to this day, his only competition is himself! EZ is an absolute, complete master of his craft!
What have been some of your standout moments so far?
Getting to play after DJ Jazzy Jeff and being told by the man himself that I was dope! Also, playing the International Roots Festival in The Gambia to a football stadium full of people; incredible experience.
What can visitors expect from your sets at Boxpark Shoreditch?
Chances are, I'll be dancing as much or more than you but, guaranteed, I'll play that one song you needed to hear!
Who should everyone be listening to right now?
Travel Light by Children of Zeus; all the music ever made by The Internet, The Book Of Ryan by Royce da 5'9"; and everything old skool, from hip hop to jungle, beacuse the old skool teaches the best lessons!
What does the rest of 2018 have in store for you?
I cant give everything away, but, above all, I intend to keep the ravers raving!
You can catch The SheJay at Boxpark Shoreditch. Be sure to follow her online on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for future events and more! Head to SheJay's Mixcloud page for mixes!
