Spotlight: Teddy Lewis
— 14 May 2018, 20:54 by Lauren Furey
It's no Boxpark party without DJ Teddy Lewis. Our very own BeatBox resident has consistently risen above the ranks and gone from strength to strength; in fact, this year, Teddy received a nomination for 'Best DJ' at the London Club & Bar Awards 2018! We caught up with the man behind the music to find out about his inspirations and what the rest of year has in store for him.
Tell us who you are and what you do.
My name is Teddy Lewis and I like to make people dance.
When did you first realise that you wanted to be a DJ?
As a teenager, I started running events and DJ-ing, but then took some time out to pursue other interests. Around 10 years ago, I found my way back into music, and I've never looked back since. DJ-ing has become my passion, some would even say obsession, and I continue to strive to make new achievements and be the best DJ I can.
Who are some of your biggest influences in music?
I grew up listening to an eclectic mix of music, with my Mum playing anything from Motown and Bob Marley, to Santana and Andrea Bocelli. I used to steal my big Sister's Biggie and Pure Swing albums, which ignited my love of Hip Hop and RnB. At age 16, I started working in a local Caribbean restaurant, where I was exposed to the sounds of Reggae and Soca. I am always looking for new influences, different styles and artists to keep my sets fresh and relative to where I'm playing; however, there are some artists that I always find myself coming back to, such as Tupac, Method Man, Beenie Man, Nas and Aaliyah. I could go on all day, but I'll just leave it there!
Have there been any standout moments for you so far?
Over the last few years I have had many great moments, including playing at Lovebox, Soundwave Croatia and Secret Garden Festival. 2018 kicked off with me representing So Fresh So Clean at Snowboxx, which was my first ski festival, in Avoriaz, France. In 2017, I played the Fresh Island Festival launch party at Boxpark Shoreditch, which led to me playing at the festival in Croatia in front of my biggest crowds to date, warming up for Giggs and Rae Sremmurd.
What can visitors expect from your sets at Boxpark Shoreditch?
Straight up vibes! I like to mix it up with different flavours of hip hop, RnB, dancehall, afrobeats and grime. No fillers, just bangers to really get the party started. I like to read the crowd, and play off their energy, working together is what gets the dance floor so lit.
Who should everyone be listening to right now?
Teddy Lewis - come watch me play! Seriously though, there's so much out there at the moment in the UK, US and further afield that it's hard to choose. Recently I've seen Mahalia, Ms Banks and Suspect perform live, and although completely different artists, all ones to look out for this year.
What does the rest of 2018 have in store for you?
I aim to keep the momentum going from 2017, and already have some big festivals booked such as Fresh Island and Soundwave. In London you can find me at So Fresh So Clean, Hip Hop Brunch, Supa Dupa Fly, Casa Loca and of course Boxpark Shoreditch. I'll also be on the road in the UK with Good Life, and trying to make time to play out in Amsterdam and Ibiza again soon.
