Groove Kitchen swiftly made a name for itself when it arrived at Boxpark Croydon, and it’s little wonder that this freeform live music event is the success that it is. To get the lowdown on their latest event and to find out what lies ahead, we caught up with, drummer, Sam Blue.

Hi Sam, tell us who you are and what you do.

My Name is Sam Blue And I am a member of the Blue Revolutions team that brings you the Groove Kitchen. I'm a drummer, percussionist, drum teacher, Bateria Director and Musical Director.

What did you make of Groove Kitchen’s return to Boxpark Croydon on 22 April?

It was a great mix of live music and audience interaction. We love it when the crowd gets involved.

How can people get involved?

Firstly, our events are always free, so grab a free ticket from the Eventbrite link; you’ll also get a 20% discount at Nanny Outars & Sweet Bean! If you want to sing or play a song then just drop us an email – [email protected], or you can sign up with Shay on the night. If you like to paint to music, recite poetry, sing, or play an instrument then come along and become part of the night!

What advice would you have for someone who may want to showcase their musical talents?

Prepare yourself as much as possible; practice a few different things so you don't get stuck.

Never let fear stop you from doing anything that you want to do.

When did you first realise that you had a passion for drumming?

I think I had a passion for drumming from about 2 years old, I would be beating books, pots and pans, but then I managed to get on a drum kit age 8 age 9, and I made the decision that I was going to make a career from drumming.

What does 2018 have in store for you?

2018 is a year of building on the projects that are already running to make them even better. I’ll also be working on the ways to diversify what I already do. As a musician now you have to be able to do more than one thing well.

Finally, what was the last song you listened to?

Not sure which was the last one but I listened to the set list for my gig on Saturday, which is very soulful and Motown sounding.
