Spotlight: Raver Tots
— 30 Dec 2017 by Lauren Furey
We're kicking off our 2018 events calendar with something unique.
On New Year's Day, Raver Tots will be taking over Boxpark Croydon to throw the ultimate children's party. We caught up with founder, MIke Pickets, to find out more.
Tell us who you are and what you do.
My name is Mike and I’m the founder of Raver Tots. I’m a proud and single father of two young toddlers, aged one and three, and I’ve been crazy about the rave scene since I was a young.
How did the idea for Raver Tots come about?
The unofficial answer is my need to get a rave fix and still be in bed by 8pm with a cup of tea.
Rave music has been my passion since I was ten yeas old, when I’d save my dinner money to by rave tapes. I started to DJ at age twelve and put on my first party when I was eighteen. I resurrected the legendary rave brand Fusion back in 2013; at it’s peak Fusion sold out venues like Wembley Arena, and even the Sanctuary Music arena, in Milton Keynes. They were hosted by the likes of Andy C, Carl Cox and SL2. I became a dad around a year later and found myself organising kids parties every so often.
I decided it was time to put the two big loves of my life together, being a parent and the rave scene!
What can ticket holders expect from the NYD special?
We have tons of fun for the kids, including three play areas, face painting, bubble machines, confetti explosions. There'll also be familiar cartoon characters for the kids to meet, and of course the legendary Nicky Blackmarket and Artful Dodger will be on the decks!
With Artful Dodger and Nicky Blackmarket joining you for the party, is it fair to say this is as much for the parents as it is the children?
Absolutely! It’s rare to find something kids and parents love as much as each other.
What song best sums up Raver Tots?
Origin Unknown – Valley of the Shadows has probably been the most played track on the tour last year and gets pulled back pretty much every time!
Finally, what does 2018 have in store for you?
We are planning lots of festivals at the moment as well as a tour with Garage Nation, that kicks off in Feb. We’re in around 30 cities now and continuing to grow. We’re most excited about coming back to Boxpark in the new year as, for us, there really is nowhere else like it in the UK that combines so much for families, with so much food, culture, music and community spirit. We love it and can’t wait for 2018!
