Spotlight: Lynnie Z

Lynnie Z is a London-based artist whose bold and colourful work has netted her famous clients like Coca Cola, Mac cosmetics, Absolut vodka and even the New York Times. After her head-turning exhibition at Boxpark Shoreditch, we caught up with Lynnie to find out what inspires her and how she brings her vibrant work to life.
Tell us who you are and what you do.
My name is Lynnie Z and I am an artist.
What inspired the bright, almost psychedelic, style of your work?
I have a huge love for colour! I think being a kid of the 90’s might have something to do with it, I collected so much colourful nonsense back then and it’s still the case today. Now, I can see how these visual libraries have made their roots and propelled my interests of colour into the core of my work. I find myself working with bold flat colour and mediums that come in limited palettes, the aim is to play with these restrictions to create a balance that is stimulating yet harmonising.
Tell us about your exhibition at Boxpark.
My exhibition with Boxpark has been a great experience. I have never exhibited in such a large format before! Lately, my work has been on the smaller end of the spectrum so it was wonderful to see these paintings increased to such a massive scale! During the exhibition, I received a few commission enquiries for large scale paintings which I’m currently working on, so it’s definitely been a catalyst that’s for sure!
Who were some of your biggest artistic influences when you were starting out?
John Bellany is probably the Artist who has had the biggest influence on me. I think my parents love for him rubbed off on me from an early age. I’ve loved drawing people since I can remember, so I think his abundant and, sometimes, repetitive portraits really spoke to my way of working; each of his paintings carry such a vibrant energy, even though his subjects are often dark and painful.
If i’m having a dull day I can always turn to him for inspiration, same with many of the Artists that I discovered in my formative years, the inspiring feelings attached to them remain unchanged.
Talk us through your creative process.
My creative process is all centred around my sketchbooks and my mind being in an open state. The hardest part is getting your mind in the right place. I’m naturally a night owl, I love the solitude and stillness of the night, I find my strongest work is created in these moments.
Sketchbooks are immensely important as they keep hold of my creative flow, I can pick up where I left off and there’s no space to be precious or measured. The organic nature of them makes them a safe place to process any project.
What does the rest of 2017 have in store for you?
The rest of 2017 is looking pretty exciting. I’m currently packing up for my first art residency which is taking place at Mermaid Ranch in the Hamptons just outside New York. I will be heading there to create to a body work with 3 very talented Artists - Hattie Stewart, Eve Lloyd Knight and Alice Hartley.
It has been a very busy year, so the prospect of putting the studio on pause and focussing solely on a body of personal work is very special!
