Spotlight: JaJa Kisses
— 20 Aug 2018 by Lauren Furey
GRL GNG returns to Boxpark Croydon this week with a stellar line up in tow. We sat down with JaJa Kisses to get the lowdown on her personal inspirations and what you can expect from her performance.
Tell us who you are and what you do.
I'm JaJa Kisses, an alternative R&B artist; I write songs, make music, visuals, art and vibes.
How did you get involved with GRL GNG?
I met Naomi (Naysap) on the set of Ray Blk's music vid and we've been supporting each other ever since! I love the platform and branding she's created and am excited to see it grow.
What can people expect from you at GRL GNG on Wednesday?
I have some new songs I'm excited about dropping this year, 'Blaze' and 'Get Yours', so I'm gonna test the waters and just share the vibes.
You've described yourself as Bjork and Sade's lovechild, what is it about those artists that inspires you?
Bjork is my music spirit idol and discovering her was one of the most inspiring moments in music for me because she really broke away from the popular structures and fusion of genres that really excited me and made me feel like the wacky demos I was creating could eventually sound cohesive, immersive and enjoyable.
GRL GNG empowers female artists, is this something that feels important to you right now?
Of course, I think it's important that we reflect the change we want to see. As a community, we are having more discussions and shedding light on areas of inequality and ideas that still need nourishment and improvement.
What does the rest of 2018 have in store for you?
Look out for some new singles from me and also a super trippy joint project with my partner in crime, Flowzart, called 'TORPIA'.
What was the last song you listened to?
