Seems like things are bopping along nicely down at the BeatBox. You guys are lapping up the new social space, and our homegrown events, Down in the 'Ditch and Pie & Mash Up, are introducing scores of Boxpark visitors to some of the best DJs the city has to offer. One such talent is Chux. We sat him down to find out more about his inspiration and what you can expect from him at Boxpark Shoreditch.

Tell us who you are and what you do.

I'm a London-born music lover, DJ and co-founder of The Pipe Dreamers, a collective me and my brother started 2 years ago.

When did you first realise that you wanted to be a DJ?

I remember the moment I realised I wanted to start DJing. I was in America with friends, and one of my boys had brought his small midi controller to the house for the weekend, which I hadn't seen before; after that weekend, and when I got back to the UK, I saved up to buy a similar controller. From there, I realised I was serious about getting better and so decided I wanted to learn on turntables, which I inherited from my dad and the rest is history.

Who are some of your biggest influences in music?

Some of my earliest influences are D'angelo, Erykah Badu and Jeff Lorber. Artists like these guys were played throughout my household when I was younger, along with a heavy dose of UK Garage. Later on when I really started getting into Hip Hop, my boy, Dozer Carter, brought me onto groups like A Tribe Called Quest and Slum Village, which opened me up to a whole world of vibes.

Have there been many standout moments for you, in your career, so far?

Definitely! I have supported my favourite DJ in the world, the magnificent, Jazzy Jeff. I have had the joy of touring with some of my closest friends, supporting artists like Talib Kweli and Loyle Carner, and, after running an event for just a year, 'ILLICIT' was booked for Fresh Island Festival in Croatia, which is something we never thought would happen so quick.

What can visitors expect from your sets at Boxpark Shoreditch?

First and foremost - energy. I love what I do and it shows when I play. I sing and dance to the songs I play because I'm a music lover first and a DJ second. As far as music, you'll hear a heavy dose of Hip Hop, old school and current, along with bashment, dancehall and more!

Who should everyone be listening to right now?

There are too many artist I'd love to put people on to, it's hard to choose. Currently, I'm listening to a lot of Tom Misch, Rapsody and Kendrick Lamar but my musical palette changes week to week, so you may get a different answer next week.

Finally, what does 2018 have in store for you?

More positivity and vibes! I am now DJing for my boy Barney Artist, so will be touring and playing a few festivals. Also, next month see's the ILLICIT 2 year anniversary, which is another great milestone for me and my brother. Other than that I just want to do more of what I love, continue to push myself and put myself in challenging situations.
