Your weekends just wouldn't be the same without our selection of resident DJs dropping top tracks and big beats for your listening pleasure. One such resident is DJ Blondie. We sat him down to find out about his inspirations, his plans fo the year ahead and what you can expect from him at Boxpark Croydon.

Tell us who you are and what you do.

My name is Blondie and I am an entertainer, not just a DJ. I'm also a living legend, ha ha!

When did you first realise that you wanted to be a DJ?

I’ve always loved music, it was my escape. When I started college, I met with up and coming DJs that where already making an impact and a name for themselves. In those days I had the gift of the gab, I still do, and people told me to be an MC, but I didn’t feel comfortable with holding a mic. I preferred the buzz I felt watching crowd respond to my set.

Who are some of your biggest influences in music?

This is a difficult one, I have to break this down into two sections.

If we are talking DJs then it would have to DJ Sticky. He is also a producer and close friend. We met back in college. Sticky had a sound called ILL KIDZ, he was the one that really gave me the confidence to start my DJ career. He told me what tunes to buy and select, the importance of crowd reaction, the art of DJ’ing and what comes with it. He told me the number one rule that I still follow: "Play for the ladies and the rest will follow".

Musically, my influences were Prince, one of the most gifted entertainers the world has ever seen, as well as Timberland and Dr Dre for their production. I love 90s Hip Hop and RnB; I think that was a golden era.

What have been some of your biggest event highlights, so far?

Well, in 2017, two of my biggest highlights were DJ’ing in Jamaica for a music festival call Brit Jam. It was always one of my dreams to DJ in Jamaica. It was a great experience and a beautiful country and hopefully I will be back in 2019. Also, Hideout Festival with Amps & Decks in Croatia. I had the chance to close the festival with over 5000 ravers!

What can visitors expect from your sets at Boxpark Croydon?

It's quite simple - vibes! Tunes, old and new, turntable entertainment, a good music night. Nothing less and a whole lot more!

What does 2018 have in store for you?

I'm always working on personal evolution and growth. I've been talking to some connections I have made in Houston, Texas called "Waxaholics". I am getting some dates for them to come over as they are loving the UK scene right now. Hopefully I can bring them over! Just last night, I was asked about working in Gambia in November. I haven’t been back since I was last there in 2015. And of course my brand "ROK", which I bought to Boxpark in 2017. ROK sold out within 2 hours and will be bigger and better this year!

I have my hands in a lot of pies at the moment and I am limited in what detail I can give but, needless to say, 2018 will be a great year for me. Also, look out for my new mixes dropping throughout the year.

Finally, what was the last song you listened to?
