Spotlight: AS.IF KID
— 18 Jul 2018 by Lauren Furey
This week, Glitched returns to Boxpark for a night of genre blending urban sounds with some DJs you know and some you ought to be on the lookout for. We caught up with one such talent, AS.IF KID, to find out more.
Tell us who you are and what you do.
I am a 23 year old music producer and DJ, I come from Swindon, Wiltshire, and I came from a background of drumming and percussion. I started playing the drums when I was eight, and since then have developed my creativity, branching out into using, firstly, an electronic drum kit and a synth, then Logic Pro 9/X. I play mostly UK Garage sets and Grime sets, but also am into DnB and Jungle; I make all of these genres also. On a day to day basis I wake up, make tunes and then take projects to studio sessions to work with other artists. I also collaborate a lot with other producers.
I first started listening to Grime when I was in school. I remember having Dizzee's 'I Luv U' ringtone on my Nokia! Channel U was big back then and what drew me into the whole scene was the element of surprise, not knowing what to expect with each new tune coming out! After a few years had passed, making music, I started to try and recreate that same vibe of surprises. I used to always listen to UK Garage, and after listening to what was on the radio I was heavily influenced by the London sound . When I was at uni I used to travel down to Fabric a lot, to go and see all the top DJs perform; the likes of Slimzee , Wookie, EL-B and so on.
What can we expect from you at Glitched at Boxpark Shoreditch?
I’m going to play a mix of old and new UK Garage stuff, some of it being my own productions . Expect some gems and some hopefully surprising new music.
Who should everyone be listening to right now?
It was most probably at University when I joined a society called the Electronic Music society. I had a go on a set of my mates Serato decks in the first year, then second year I’d bought a pair of Numark's. I hosted this mad party in the student flat, people were going nuts and smashing up the place; I can remember that like it was yesterday, someone drunk a bottle of cough medicine and left their bag on a grill that was turned on it all melted in! It was these mad nights which made my experience of music and youth culture begin to grow .
What does the rest of 2018 have in store for you?
I have been so busy these last few months working on new material and with new artists. I have been producing stuff for various upcoming talents, but cannot say too much yet on that! I’ve been working with Slimzee on some new stuff, as our alias, E3 Breaks. Watch out for some more mucky stuff in that side of my music. I’m playing at Outlook Festival with Slimzos and MeanStreets this year, and doing a boat party with the crew! Gonna aim to learn as much as I can and develop this year for an even bigger next year!
What was the last song you listened to?
New Horizon's 'Find Your Path', released on 500 Rekords.
