Something new and exciting arrived at Boxpark Croydon this month. We say new and exciting because we've decided to break from the norm and introduce a new trader, one who isn't serving up wings, burgers or beverages. No, this June, we're proud to welcome The Barber Club to the Boxpark family, where you can treat yourself to a fresh do and a cutthroat shave.

We caught up with head honcho Dimitri Loizi to find out more.

Tell us who you are and what you do.

I’m Dimitri Loizi, founder of the Barber Club, and former Educational Director of he fastest growing hairdressing group in the UK.

The Barber Club opened in 2017 in the lanes of Brighton. We wanted to create the perfect  blend of modern hairdressing techniques and traditional barbering skills. Within our two shops, we have some of the most talented barbers In the industry, in amongst a friendly, vibrant and energetic atmosphere. Having grown up in Croydon, I feel it’s the perfect location for our second shop.

How did the idea for The Barber Club come about?

I’d worked in hairdressing for 20 years and felt there needed to be a space where men could have all the benefits of a salon, but in a more male dominated environment. The barber industry has had a big boom over the last few years, mainly as male hairdressing is now an optional module in the NVG training courses, so more and more hairdressers weren’t fully confident in mens' hair, but they were still charging premium prices. We’ve tried to bridge the gap between the top-end salon and the old fashioned barber shops, but in our opinion offering the best haircuts with our passionate and dedicated team of barbers.

What song best sums up your brand?

We actually have a playlist on Spotify called The Barber Club Brighton/Croydon, which totally encapsulates the shop; It’s eclectic, but when you listen to it, you’ll understand the feeling we're trying to achieve. The Payback – James Brown, anything from Jimi Hendrix or Led Zeppelin are shop favourites.

What can visitors expect from The Barber Club at Boxpark Croydon?

I hope our customers enjoy our nod to some of Croydon’s history, from the movie Let Him Have It, and it’s early Punk influences from the 70s, which we’ve incorporated into our shop design. Ultimately, we aim to be a social hub where our customers will look forward to returning to us time and time again. Hopefully they’ll enjoy great hair, fine drinks and good company.

Which other Boxpark Croydon trader would you recommend to customers?

I came down with a member of staff recently and took him to Coqfighter, which blew his mind, and said it was one of the best burgers he’s ever had!

What is your favourite thing about Croydon?

I grew up in Croydon, I actually spent five years working in George Street when I was younger.  I’ve always loved the energy and the different characters that you encounter in the town. I know and have met a large amount of creative people locally, and have always felt that comes from the town and the influences that it brings.

Finally, what was the last song you listened to?

Hundred Mile High City by Ocean Colour Scene
