England V Colombia Highlights
— 4 Jul 2018 by Matt Carter
Well, that’s it – England are through to the quarter final stage of the 2018 World Cup.
There were unreal scenes at Boxpark Croydon and Shoreditch as the masses gathered to watch what has to have been one of the most nail biting games of the tournament, so far.
Fans donned the three lions and proudly sang along to the national anthem as England geared up for their qualifying match against Colombia.
Now, we’re England fans, we’ve learned not to be unrealistic over the years, but this World Cup has given us a glimmer of hope, the like we haven’t seen in 20 years; spirits were soaring and tension was rising but support for the boys in red was at its highest.
It was a dramatic first half with England mounting the pressure and creating opportunities, whilst Colombia pushed back with foul play and screaming matches with the ref. But it wasn’t until the second half when the drama really amped up.
A blatant foul against Harry Kane inside the box cost Colombia dearly as we were awarded a penalty, making tensions soar – Colombia, indignant with the ref’s decision, taking it upon themselves to scuff the penalty spot. It was Captain Fantastic to the rescue though as Kane expertly planted his shot in the back of the net, sending fans up and down the country into a frenzy!
At that point we all just wanted it to end, but, unfortunately, due to the scuffles and tantrums on the pitch, the match received an additional five minutes of stoppage time and it was a crucial last minute corner for Colombia that saved them from certain elimination.
Emotions ran high across Boxpark as we watched with baited breath as England and Colombia went into the next 30 minutes with everything they had. And it really seemed like the final score might belong to Colombia, as it was they who appeared to dominate into extra time with a few near misses sending England fans into cardiac arrest.
Unsurprising and in true English World Cup fashion the game went to penalties. If fans hadn’t broken into a cold sweat then they were certainly pouring buckets now.
You could hear a pin drop as Harry Kane lined up to take the first England penalty knocking some confidence into the England fans with a beautiful shot, but it looked like our dreams might be dashed when Jordan Henderson missed, giving Colombia the advantage.
Then, something magic happened – Colombia’s Mateus Uribe took a confident swing and hit the bar, followed by a blinding save from Jordan Pickford against Carlos Bacca, sending Boxpark’s crowds into overdrive.
It all hung on Eric Dier whose beautiful penalty secured England’s place in the World Cup and saw us through to play Sweden on Saturday.
Scenes of elation filled Boxpark as drinks went flying, shirts came off and songs were song. A chorus of ‘Three Lions’ rolled out into the streets of Shoreditch as people came together to celebrate England’s victory. Truly magic scenes.
And the excitement doesn’t end there.
We return to cheer on the home team on Saturday afternoon at 3pm. Be sure to keep a lookout on the Boxpark World Cup page for details of future screenings and ticket availability.
