Made in Croydon Market
— 26 Aug 2018 by Lauren Furey
This Bank Holiday Monday sees the return of the Made in Croydon market at Boxpark! We caught up with, co-founder, Josi to find out what you can expect.
Tell us who you are and what you do.
We are Made in Croydon, a not for profit organisation that links artists, designers and makers who live in, work in or are inspired by Croydon. We’re a group of locals, of all different ages and backgrounds, who set up exhibitions, workshops, market events and socials to help the MIC members connect, showcase and sell their work and grow Croydon’s creative community.
How did Made in Croydon come about?
Like all great ideas, MIC was born over several cups of tea and many cakes! A few of us had always said, wouldn’t it be great if Croydon had a network to connect all of the interesting people creating work in or about Croydon, organise events where people can sell their work and get the experience to grow their careers and really put Croydon creativity on the map. And so we created Made in Croydon to do just that.
What can people expect from the Made in Croydon Market at Boxpark?
Fantastic finds and treasures including, inspiring art works and jewellery; designer fashion and textiles; funky cards and finely crafted ceramics; paper craft and fabulous fragrances all created by locals.
Made in Croydon supports the cultural heart of Croydon, how do you see that evolving in the future as the borough continues to develop?
We have so many exciting plans to develop what we do and provide an even higher profile for our members. This includes finding a permanent ‘home’ for MIC with a company office and artist workshop spaces, and hosting open days and art trails, as well as classes for both artists and makers to help grow their businesses and members of the public to experience art, craft & design first hand.
What is your favourite thing about Croydon?
We love the fact it brings together people from all backgrounds and walks of life who are doing amazing things and having fun – despite the sometimes negative views of the borough.
Do you have any food favourites at Boxpark?
We love the variety but there are a few stand-outs for us – namely Chillbox, Indigo and Wine & Deli.
What was the last song you listened to?
The team’s tastes vary, we all love live music of any kind, from grime to jazz. We’ve just done a cool playlist and so our current number one is Take Five from the Dave Brubeck Quartet, which may very well be aired at tomorrow's Boxpark market!
Made in Croydon's market will be open at Boxpark Croydon from 10am to 5pm. You can follow them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
