Us ladies are tireless creatures. We've achieved so much and yet we still work to be heard and treated as equals. Doesn't seem like a lot to ask. But, fortunately, we are a predominantly progressive society and we're embracing equality and celebrating our similarities and our differences. We're listening to every voice.
International Women's Day is coming up (8 March to be exact) and the theme this year is #BeBoldForChange. The objective is for each and every person to demonstrate and exemplify a positive, inclusive and gender-equal world. Because wouldn't Earth just be a far nicer place to live if we just did that one thing? It really is as simple as that.
Boxpark Croydon is proud to be working alongside groups within the local community to help deliver that message and celebrate the achievements of women both internationally and close to home. Throughout next week, we'll be showcasing a selection of events aimed at inspiring and empowering the women of Croydon and further afield.
One of these events is Ladies First. Award winning local photographer, Jackie King, will be delivering an exhibition of portraits featuring some of the most extraordinary and influential women in Croydon; including, Olympian, Donna Fraser; record-breaking marathon runner, Fiona Oakes; one of the borough's first female firefighters, Lara Richardson; Val Shawcross (CBE) - the Deputy Mayor of Transport and Croydon Council's CEO, Jo Negrini. Plus many, many more.
The exhibition will be held at Croydon Council's Bernard Weatherill House but the images will also be broadcast on the big screen at Boxpark.
Alongside this unique glimpse into the lives of some of Croydon's most empowering women is another pin-up exhibition run entirely by the public. You're invited to bring and display a photograph of the most important and influential women in your life. Maybe your mother, grandmother, auntie, cousin, sister, niece, friend, manager, teacher, colleague has helped you feel good, achieve things you never thought possible or even just lead by a great example. Whatever your reason, tell us all how proud you are of the strong women in you life and show them off at #LadiesFirstCroydon.
The Ladies First exhibition launches from 11am on Wednesday 8 March.
